“It’s sad if people think that’s (homemaking) a dull existence, [but] you can’t just buy an apartment and furnish it and walk away. It’s the flowers you choose, the music you play, the smile you have waiting. I want it to be gay and cheerful, a haven in this troubled world. I don’t want my husband and children to come home and find a rattled woman. Our era is already rattled enough, isn’t it?”
― Audrey Hepburn
What does it mean to be “retro in a modern world”? Yes, dressing retro is part of the fun, but it’s so much more than that! I’ve compiled a list of characteristics that I feel encompass the retro lifestyle, and can give you a jumping off point if, you too, feel that some retro needs to be brought back into the world!
- Unplug – For obvious reasons, this does not mean throw away your laptop, phone, TV, etc. What fun would that be?? I’m not a caveman! What it does mean is that technology should not be the biggest chunk of your day. Now, some people work and must be plugged in all day. No problem there! Unplug simply means not sitting yourself, or your kids, in front of technology all evening and/or all weekend. It means not having your phone out at dinner, when you’re at brunch with friends, or any time when human interaction should be taking place.
- Cherish the Home – Nowadays saying you’re a homemaker is like saying “I’m a slave, and I hate any advancements women have gained. I am woman, hear me…chore?” Why?? What is wrong with loving your home and loving taking care of it and your family? Even if you work outside the home, if you leave work and have somewhere where you sleep, keep your things, bathe, cook, whatever…then you, my dear, are a homemaker. Congratulations! Take pride in it. Make it your own. Make it homey for your spouse and children. Make it a place your family wants to come home to. Do that, and your kids will always enjoy coming home, no matter how old they are.
- Keep your Appearance Lovely – Here’s where I’m going to get a lot of flack. When I say “keep your appearance lovely,” do I mean that you shouldn’t lounge around all day in pajamas? That you shouldn’t go to the store in yoga pants and flip flops with no makeup on? That you should get dressed and look nice every single day? Yes. Yes, that’s exactly what I mean! As the years have advanced, people have gotten sloppy. I see people at the grocery store, the airport, hair salons dressed in pajama pants and wearing slippers. SLIPPERS! Out of the house! If you want a more classy, retro lifestyle…girl…get up and get dressed! Put on makeup! Do your hair! I am pregnant, and I have a 2 year old…I know this can be tricky. But, it’s so worth it! You’ll feel so so so much better throughout your day!
- Cook Real Food – I love getting on Pinterest and finding vintage recipes <—sneaky way of telling you to follow me on Pinterest ;). Retro women cooked simple, real, fresh food for their families. Very little was processed and chemical-filled, and there was definitely no GMO products (yuck!). Cooking fresh food not only makes everything taste better, it is almost like meditation. I’m serious. If you have kids, a job, a busy schedule…you know that finding time to meditate is almost impossible. But cooking can be your meditation! Slicing vegetables and smelling their aromas, stirring sauces, tasting ingredients: all this, while listening to The Andrew Sisters Pandora, can be emotionally recharging. Trust me. Just try it.
I’m going to leave it there. Sure, there’s a lot more to try and incorporate when living the retro lifestyle. But, I think these are great for starting. And if you already live a retro lifestyle, these are perfect to hone in and get back on track. Comment below…what’s important to you in your retro lifestyle? Retro practices you can’t live without?
